She was born in Kerala and only recieved a rudimentery education. She got married to Subbarama Swaminathan who educated her and helped her become fluent in English. They had four children, including Mrinalini Sarabhai and Captain Lakshmi Sahgal (Swaminathan). It was under her husband's tutelage and inspiration that Ammu became a follower of Mahatma Gandhi. In 1917, she worked with several other visionaries to set the Women’s India Association (WIA) at Adyar, Madras. WIA transformed into one of the largest women’s rights organizations in India, and it worked to tackle social issues such as child marriage and the devadasi practice. It made representations before the Montague Chelmsford Commission, 1917 and advocated for equality of voting rights for women. IIn 1952, Ammu Swaminadhan was elected a member of the Rajya Sabha from (then) Madras State. Her contributions to social work and her active involvement in the Indian freedom struggle have left a lasting legacy in India's history.
