The Trey McIntyre Project Is Back—And Completely Reimagined
Six years after shuttering his popular dance troupe Trey McIntyre Project, its eponymous founder is relaunching the company as a conduit for digital dance films, with a project called FLTPK. “It’s not a company of dancers,” McIntyre insists. “It’s a community of artists.”
In March, McIntyre was ready to premiere his David Bowie balletPretty Things, his first new work for Houston Ballet in nearly two decades, when the city shut down. With COVID-19 infections in the New York City area spiking, he decided to stay put.
Having transitioned to dance filmmaker since the initial closing of TMP, he was eager to move beyond the lonely dancer in the living room trope—and to put the furloughed Houston Ballet dancers to work. “The COVID crisis has put the need for new digital content into high gear as people find ways to spend their time at home,” says McIntyre. “There is a great hunger for art presented in this way, but a lack of great content.”
So he made three dance films: Who Am I Here? with Chun Wai Chan, Karina Gonzáles and Syvert Lorenz Garcia; The Call with Chandler Dalton, Connor Walsh and Chae Eun Yang; and Prāṇ& • American dancer and choreographer Trey McIntyre (born November 12, 1969)[1] is an American dancer and choreographer, who has a body of work that includes around 100 original dance pieces.[2] He founded and acts as president of Trey McIntyre Project, a dance company that was based in Boise, Idaho,[3] where he lived in the historic Northend.[4] McIntyre was born in Wichita, Kansas,[5] and trained at North Carolina School of the Arts and Houston Ballet Academy. In 1989, he was appointed Choreographic Apprentice to Houston Ballet, a position created especially for him,[6] and in 1995 he became the company’s Choreographic Associate.[7] He has worked for 27 years as a freelance choreographer, producing over 100 pieces during the span of his career so far.[6] In 2005, McIntyre founded his dance company, Trey McIntyre Project (TMP), which first appeared at the Vail International Dance Festival.
